Big Girl Room Makeover: A Birthday Surprise Transformation
When your seven-year-old asks for floral wallpaper as her birthday gift, you know she’s officially entering her big girl era. And while the thought of installing wallpaper ourselves was a little intimidating, we decided to take on the challenge—and it turned out even better than we imagined! This big girl room makeover was such a fun family project, from picking out the wallpaper to adding custom details that make the space feel so special and uniquely hers.
Floral Wallpaper: Her Birthday Wish Come True
I’ll admit it—I was nervous about this one. We’d never installed wallpaper before, but when our daughter kept asking for floral wallpaper for her birthday, how could we say no? We found the prettiest floral pattern that was under $10 a roll (yes, seriously!), and it completely transformed the space.
We used a PEEL & STICK WALLPAPER to make it beginner-friendly, and give us the option if she wanted to change it in the future. We also discovered a few game-changing tools along the way, I have to share with you! The real MVP? This WALLPAPER SPRAY that let us reposition each strip even after sticking it to the wall—such a lifesaver when trying to match patterns! We also used a LEVEL and PAINTER’S TAPE to make sure everything lined up perfectly.
Adding a Wood Accent for a Custom Touch
To finish off the wall and give it a custom look, we added a simple wood accent along the bottom. My husband found the perfect tool to help us cut the wood cleanly around the window sill, which made this part so much easier. We secured it using liquid nails plus real nails for extra strength since it’s along the bottom of the wall.
Fun fact: this wood was leftover from our HOME GYM PROJECT (never waste good materials!). The warm tone of the wood complements the floral wallpaper beautifully and ties everything together. We love that it’s a design element she can grow with—it feels mature without losing that sweet, feminine charm.
Scalloped Nightstands & Bow Drawer Pulls
Once the walls were finished, it was time for furniture! I’d been searching everywhere for the perfect nightstands, and when I found these SCALLOPED NIGHTSTANDS, I knew they were the ones. They’re adorable, super affordable, and offer great storage—perfect for bedtime books, secret treasures, and her ever-growing collection of accessories.

To make them even more special, I swapped out the hardware for BOW DRAWER PULLS FROM AMAZON, and they completely changed the look! The bows add that extra girly touch that ties in perfectly with the rest of her room. Sometimes it’s those small upgrades that make the biggest difference.
Finishing Touches: Bringing It All Together
Once the wallpaper, wood accent, and furniture were in place, it was time for the fun part—styling! We added the scalloped nightstands, adorable lamps, and a custom NAME SIGN that turned out even better than I hoped. I was thrilled that her existing bedding still matched perfectly with the new wallpaper, which meant I only needed to swap in a few NEW THROW PILLOW COVERS and a couple of decor accents.
The finishing piece (and one of my favorites) was the FANDELIER we added a few months ago—a combination fan and chandelier that gives the room a soft, feminine glow. It replaced her old bulky fan and instantly made the space feel more polished and elegant.
When she saw her finished room, her reaction made everything worth it! She absolutely loves her new big girl room—it’s floral, fun, and full of charm. I still can’t believe this entire transformation started with a $9 roll of wallpaper and a birthday wish!
From start to finish, this project reminded me that a little creativity (and a lot of patience) goes a long way. Whether you’re working with leftover materials or swapping hardware for a quick upgrade, these small changes can completely transform a room into something magical and meaningful.
