A Simple System That Actually Works

Our playroom was an absolute disaster zone—like, toys-everywhere, step-on-a-LEGO level chaos. It was long overdue for a major organization overhaul, so I finally tackled it, breaking the project into two days to make it more manageable.

If you’ve been putting off organizing your kids’ playroom because it feels overwhelming, I promise this system made all the difference! Here’s exactly how I transformed our space into a clean, functional, and (most importantly) easy-to-maintain playroom.

Day 1: The Great Toy Purge & Sorting

Before I could organize, I had to face the mess head-on. I started by doing what feels like the most anxiety-inducing step—dumping everything into one giant pile. Yes, it’s overwhelming, but it’s the best way to truly see what you have.

From there, I sorted:

  • Keep – Toys the kids actually play with.
  • Donate – Things they’ve outgrown or haven’t touched in months.
  • Trash – Broken or missing-piece toys that couldn’t be salvaged.

I also grouped similar toys together—stuffed animals, blocks, dolls, pretend play, arts & crafts, etc. This made it easier to plan out storage solutions.

Storage Cabinets That Changed Everything

We (and by we, I mean my husband lol) built these amazing storage cabinets that turned out to be the perfect solution! We looked at so many options, and these checked all the boxes:

✅ Affordable
✅ Tons of storage space
✅ Doors that close to hide the toys (because sometimes, mama just needs the mess out of sight!)

Once they were built, it was time to get everything in its place!

Day 2: Bins, Zip Pouches & Labels for the Win

To keep everything neat and easy to find, I used clear storage bins to categorize toys. I love using clear bins because the kids can actually see what’s inside without dumping everything out.

For small game pieces, puzzles, or craft supplies, I found the best large zip pouches—these have been a game-changer for keeping tiny pieces together.

Then came my favorite part—the labels!

I made these cute custom labels with both words and pictures so my 3-year-old can easily find things and know where to put them back. (Seriously, these labels have been the key to keeping this system working!) You can grab the label template I created HERE!

Why This System Works

Since organizing the playroom this way, the kids have done so well keeping it clean. I give full credit to:

  • The clear bins – They can easily see what they want without making a mess.
  • The labels – The pictures help even little ones know where things belong.
  • The storage cabinets – When playtime is over, we can close the doors and have a tidy space again.

Definitely Worth the Effort!

If you’ve been feeling overwhelmed by your playroom, I highly recommend tackling it in two steps: purge first, then organize with a clear system. It’s made such a huge difference in our home, and I know it’ll help you too!
